FINAL UPDATE: Witness reportedly saw man adjusting his snowboard binding before he fell 47 feet from chairlift at Keystone Resort

1:30 p.m., Thursday, Dec. 12: The individual who fell from a chairlift at Keystone Resort on Wednesday, Dec. 11, appeared to be attempting to adjust his snowboard bindings, according to the Colorado Passenger Tramway Safety Board.

The 32-year-old man sustained serious injuries in the fall, which the Tramway Safety Board said in a statement occurred on the Ruby Express chairlift near the third tower. Under Colorado law, the Tramway Safety Board investigates any death or injury related to a possible malfunction of a passenger tramway such as a chairlift.

“Based on the initial investigation and witness statement, the incident does not appear to have been caused by any lift malfunction and further investigation is not warranted at this time,” the Safety Board said in its statement.

A witness sitting in the same chair as the man who fell reported to the ski area that he was attempting to adjust his binding while the restraint bar was in the upright position, the Safety Board said.

The man – who was wearing a helmet – momentarily hung onto the armrest of the chairlift before falling about 47 feet at around 12:45 p.m., according to the Safety Board. Remaining passengers were reportedly unloaded from the lift, which was then closed to the public for an investigation, before reopening around 2:50 p.m.

Emergency personnel airlifted the man from the scene, according to the Summit County Sheriff’s Office. Keystone Resort has confirmed the incident and said the man was transported to St. Anthony Hospital in Lakewood.
