Cyclists have legal right to use roads

I ride a bicycle on Swan Mountain Road frequently, and I also drive a car and a Summit Stage bus on Swan Mountain Road from time to time. It’s true that the shoulder is narrow, but there are plenty of spots where an alert driver can get around a cyclist safely without an unreasonable delay.

At times it’s difficult to maneuver a 40-foot bus around a cyclist safely, but that’s part of why people who drive large vehicles receive extra training and hold commercial driver’s licenses.

The posted speed limit on Swan Mountain Road is 35 mph. Many large vehicles cannot safely travel at this speed, and many drivers are not comfortable driving at this speed on Swan Mountain Road.

Would Mr. Schuster like to ban anyone who does not travel at the speed limit from driving on Swan Mountain Road? Like many cyclists, I usually cycle down Swan Mountain Road at speeds close to or slightly more than the 35 mph limit, and I frequently have to choose between riding my brakes and passing cars or trucks illegally while descending Swan Mountain Road on my bicycle. Should we ban all slow moving vehicles from Swan Mountain Road so that I can ride my bicycle downhill a little faster?

I’d like to point out to Mr. Schuster that bicyclists have a legal right to use the roads in Colorado. The purpose of Colorado’s vehicle laws is to help all road users coexist safely, not to let one class of road users chase everyone else off the roads. And yes, Mr. Schuster, bicycles are allowed to use interstates in Colorado and many other states, except on specified stretches that are signposted as off limits to bicycles. Most of I-70 through Summit County is available to any cyclist who chooses to ride there.
