Daily, Journal win awards at state convention

DENVER – The Summit Daily News and Summit County Journal won a variety of awards at the annual Colorado Press Association’s annual convention in Denver Saturday. The Daily won nine awards altogether, while the Journal picked up 11 – including the “general excellence” award in its circulation class and two “sweepstakes” awards in editorial and photo/design.

As usual, photographer Mark Fox picked up multiple awards for feature and sports photos, as well as several for photo/story combination with reporter Robert Allen. Reporter Julie Sutor won awards for business and news writing. Art director Juli Watson won several graphics awards for page layout and informational graphics, while the copy desk won a number of citations for design, headline writing and overall layout. Editor Alex Miller won a second-place award for serious column writing for his work in the Daily, and sports editor Bryce Evan picked up several awards for sports writing and his column “The Breakdown.”

In advertising, the Daily’s Diane Monaghan won a first place award for “small space ad,” while the Daily won a second place overall for advertisting layout and design.
