Dana Cottrell: School board should consider outside information

Dana Cottrell

Regarding Tuesday’s Board of Education meeting discussion on equal access:

Board members Margaret Carlson and Jon Kreamelmeyer repeatedly referred to information emailed or given out that was not created by the school district as “propaganda” and “misinformation.” They also noted they never read any of the information, so how do they know it’s not legitimate? Publicly characterizing the information in this derogatory manner is interpreted by most parents as an attempt to discredit the facts and research distributed because they do not agree with the school board’s decision.

I have found there are many facts and research based articles being shared that have brought forward a real concern to our current system. We live in an open and free society where we are free to discuss alternative view points. Just as the school board members do not want their opinions publicly demeaned, the parents do not want their views demeaned either. Let’s share information without casting aspersions and making accusations.

I believe we have the opportunity to bring the community, students, parents, teachers and administration together to work for the good of all students. I believe it is a time to embrace change and that we can create that change to give all students the chance to succeed.
