Danzig plays through the season

Local musician Kevin Danzig says if Jackson Browne and Joni Mitchell had stayed together and actually had “that baby,” it would have been a lot like him.

He plays a mixture of folk, blues, country, rock and Americana from 4-7 p.m. Tuesdays through Saturdays at the Tenderfoot Lounge in Keystone, through April 10.

Raised in San Clemente, Calif., he has toured the nation for 30 years as a songwriter, playing in every state in the lower 48 and recording seven albums. His next CD, “The Time is Right,” is due out Jan. 22. It will include seven originals and seven covers of tunes from Peter Gabriel, The Beatles, Queen, Eric Clapton, Herb Alpert and the Tijuana Brass, Judy Garland and, of course, Mitchell.

“These artists are actually many of the ones who have inspired me most,” Danzig said.

Danzig describes his music as “feel good,” almost like a drug classified somewhere between a sedative and a stimulant.

“I have a way of knowing what (people) want to hear,” he said. “I guess it’s something I’ve picked up from playing in so many situations over the many years and places I’ve played.”

He imbues the 300 “songs in his head” with plenty of feeling, in order to move audiences.

“Playing as a solo act allows me the freedom to be more spontaneous and not follow a set list,” he said. “If people want to rock and roll, I can do that, or if they’d rather keep it mellow, that’s not a problem either. Playing a tambourine with my foot doesn’t hurt either.”
