David and Susan Preaus: Vote ‘no’ for the bike path

Silverthorne

As we approach an important ballot issue in Silverthorne, I would ask everyone to understand the bottom line: This is an election about a bike path, plain and simple. As much as others are trying to hide the issue behind a national hot button of eminent domain, the fact is a handful of owners want to prevent a bike path in an area that has served as a trail for over 40 years and has been in the works as a bike path for over 20 years.

The town is working diligently to provide a bike path that the community has consistently rated a high priority in community surveys year after year. The town is trying to complete a connection of the Blue River Trail that would allow our children and citizens to ride on a bike path connecting our library, Rainbow Park and Silverthorne Elementary rather than ride on streets to access these areas. The town is attempting to allow citizens on bicycles, strollers and wheelchairs to access this section of the Blue River Trail that would connect them to the countywide bike path. This trail has clearly been an objective and part of the master plan for over 20 years, and eminent domain is the last option that the town has in order to meet the needs of the community as a whole. Efforts to negotiate with these landowners have resulted in lawsuits, the loss of grant money and a great expense to all taxpayers of the Town of Silverthorne.

Please understand that this election is about connecting the Blue River Trail in Silverthorne and vote “no” on the ballot issue at hand to allow the town to do so.
