David Basile: Blame the beetles

David Basile

This is in response to Shane Wright’s “Stop the destruction of the Frisco Peninsula” and any other letter regarding tree cutting. Shane and anyone else against the tree cutting: Have you opened your eyes lately? Have you seen what our forest looks like? Did you notice the evergreens were red?

Yes, as people we can be blamed for the lack of health in the forest. However, it isn’t the cutting of trees that has decimated the pine groves. It is the pine beetle! This natural predator has changed the landscape here in Colorado dramatically! We have helped the pine beetle flourish by taking away one of its natural predators: fire. As well as temperatures do not get cold enough to keep their population in check anymore. So yes, we as people can be blamed for that.

But rest assured it is not the greedy tree companies or bureaucracies trying to make a profit by clear cutting healthy forest. They are merely trying to clean up an unhealthy forest, which does entail the cutting of trees. If they left it as is, who’s to say that all of Summit County wouldn’t burn with all of that available fuel if a forest fire would start.
