David Gray MD: Breck should open to Snowbikes

David Gray MD

Re: your article on “the future of skiing” (SDN April 9), wherein Baby Boomers are giving it up because of, among other thing, “aching knees” – an easy answer is the Snowbike. Currently, Breckenridge Ski Area makes it extremely difficult to use them. I have had a number of patients this season request a Snowbike, so they could enjoy the sport they love without their knees screaming at them after only two hours. I sent them to Copper, which is open to the sport.

Then there’s the statistic that more than 50 percent of folks who take ski lessons don’t come back because they get frustrated before the fun factor grabs them. On a Snowbike, a beginner can go down a blue run within 30 minutes, and with a smile – its that easy to learn.

Don’t even get me started on the cost of a lift ticket.

Living in Denver, maybe the honchos and decision-makers for Breck are a little out of touch. I’m told that 20 years ago snowboards weren’t welcome here, either.

Oh well, look at the positive side; we’ll have the mountain to ourselves.
