David Hudson: Christ’s influence

The recent flurry of discussion in SDN has been interesting regarding a columnist’s twisted theories on the birth of Jesus Christ. While the column contained some vile and unfounded assertions, it had a positive effect by encouraging discussion and thought regarding Jesus. Whatever your belief system may be, clearly no other figure has had as large an impact on the world as Jesus Christ. Especially at this time of year, there is no more important question than “Who is Jesus, and how does He affect my life?”

This is the essence of the Christian faith – not just a historical knowledge of a baby born in humble circumstances who grew up to be a nice philosopher, as some would believe. The Bible describes a baby who grew up, lived a truly perfect life, and sacrificed Himself in our place so that we can have life. It says that although we all fall short of God’s perfection, through Jesus we can have the relationship with God that He wants. This is the true Jesus – the inspiration for Handel’s “Messiah”, the light of the world – not the despicable fabrication presented recently by the SDN columnist.

For thousands of years, people have invented distortions regarding Jesus’ life, death, and resurrection, so the SDN’s so-called “religion” columnist is not unique. Such distortions always end up in the refuse bin of history, while the New Testament remains a historical marvel. The manuscript and archaeological evidence for the Gospel accounts of Jesus’ life is unparalled, acknowledged even by scholars who may question its divine authority. A small amount of time spent reading the life of Christ as described in the New Testament is a great investment. Wise men still seek Him.
