Dead Calif. hiker was Colo math professor

PALM SPRINGS, Calif. – One of two hikers found dead in the mountains above Palm Springs has been identified as a Colorado State University mathematics professor.

The university identified him Wednesday as 64-year-old Robert Liebler of Fort Collins.

A friend, Ben Manvel, says Liebler also did national defense work and was in Palm Springs working with a local think tank.

He went hiking Saturday in the San Jacinto Mountains but began feeling ill and told a friend he would return to the trailhead. He was reported missing and his body was found Sunday.

The body of another hiker, whose name has not been released, was found in the same area on Sunday. Authorities say the two weren’t hiking together.
