Dean nominates Pelosi to chair 2008 Democrats convention

DENVER – Democratic National Committee Chairman Howard Dean said Monday he planned to nominate an all-female slate to chair the 2008 Democratic National Convention in Denver.Dean planned to nominate U.S. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi to serve as permanent chair of the Denver convention. He said he would nominate Kansas Gov. Kathleen Sebelius, Texas state Sen. Leticia Van de Putte and Atlanta Mayor Shirley Franklin as convention co-chairs.They would preside over convention proceedings as the party nominates its presidential and vice presidential candidates and adopts its national platform.Convention delegates will vote on the nominations at the opening session in August.Pelosi, vice chair of the 1996 convention, is the first woman to serve as speaker of the House.Sebelius is chair of the Democratic Governors Association.Van de Putte is the first Hispanic to serve as president of the National Conference of State Legislatures.Franklin is the first female mayor of Atlanta.
