Debbie Tyber: Wilderness and fire
Breckenridge
I just wanted to remind people while the fire danger in Summit County is rated extreme and fire bans are in effect to think about the potential impact of wilderness expansion in our state. Fires in wilderness areas are allowed to burn and there’s not an attempt to control them. Remember the Yellowstone fire. So if we allow more parts of our state to be classified as wilderness, there is more potential to lose those areas for our lifetimes in the event of a wildfire. Be careful what you wish for.

Summit Daily is embarking on a multiyear project to digitize its archives going back to 1989 and make them available to the public in partnership with the Colorado Historic Newspapers Collection. The full project is expected to cost about $165,000. All donations made in 2023 will go directly toward this project.
