Deirdre’s Dish: The billion-dollar divorce
April 16, 2009
To say Mel Gibson is having a bad week is more than an understatement. His wife, Robyn, has just filed for divorce after 28 years of marriage and 7 children. The divorce, which is based on “irreconcilable differences,” isn’t that shocking considering that the couple has been separated for three years. I think the demise of their rela tionship started right after Mel’s anti-Semitic rant tied with a DUI arrest. Who can forget his crazy-eyed mugshot? Apparently Mel has wrestled with alcohol and depression in the past, and at times the drinking can get out of control, which we all witnessed first-hand. So it’s not that surprising the couple is calling it quits for good, but it looks like this divorce could make the monetary war between Sir Paul McCartney and Heather Mills look like two kids fighting over milk money. Remember that little movie called “Passion of the Christ” that made $600 million at the box office alone? It catapulted him to be one of the richest men in the nation. If only he’d signed a prenup because it looks like the king is about to lose his riches. Without a prenup, Mel’s wife is entitled to half of everything he’s earned in their nearly three decades together, which translates to about $500 million. It looks like this divorce could be Hollywood’s most expensive in history.
The sport of tennis gets more press for it’s sexy players than it d oes for it’s game. Maria Sharapova, Anna Kournikova, Roger Federer, and Andy Roddick are among the standout beauties. And now two of these players are officially off the market. Roger Federer had a shotgun wedding with his girlfriend and former tennis player, Mirka Vavrinec, over the Easter weekend in his hometown of Basel, Switzerland. The couple are expecting a baby this summer.
Are Federer and Roddick competing on and off the court? In a possible effort not to be outshone by his competitor, Roddick and his fiancee are tying the knot this weekend in Austin, TX. Roddick and model Brooklyn Decker have been together since 2007 after they met through a magazine. Yep, that’s how this courtship started. Roddick saw Decker in Sports Illustrated and it was love at first sight. He had his agent set them up because apparently that’s how they do it in Hollywood. My bets are on Federer.
But more when it comes to the ladies than his football moves. Maybe Denver’s single scene wasn’t enticing enough for him because you never heard about him hitting the Lodo scene, or any other Denver social scenario. I originally thought that was because he didn’t want to expose his underwhelming personality, but I guess the city is to blame because Cutler has really taken to the Chicago nightlife. The Bear’s new QB didn’t spend the Easter weekend at church. He was out club-hopping, drinking and womanizing. Cutler, along with new teammate Greg Olsen, was out knocking back drinks while enjoying all the female attention. Perhaps this is Cutler’s way of getting to know the city and his new team, but maybe he should lay off the partying for the sake of his diabetes and that double chin he’s been sporting.
