Democratic senator apologizes for $1,400 reparations request

DENVER – Three days after lawmakers announced an ethics investigation, state Sen. Deanna Hanna apologized Monday for asking for a $1,400 campaign contribution as “reparations” from a group that backed her election opponent.”I can clearly see that I used words and phrases that were very inappropriate,” the Lakewood Democrat told her Senate colleagues. The Senate’s top Republican promptly called for her to step down for harming the reputation of the political process.”She should resign this seat and let it be filled by someone who supports this system,” said Minority Leader Andy McElhany, R-Colorado Springs. The Senate launched an ethics investigation last week after Hanna’s letter to the Colorado Association of Realtors came to light. Senate leaders said Hanna’s letter told the group, “There are going to be some very important issues ahead of us. You have a choice. So do I.”Senate Majority Leader Ken Gordon had said the “reasonable interpretation” of Hanna’s request was that it was intended to make the group afraid she would vote against its interests if it didn’t donate to her campaign. The Senate formed a committee of three Democrats and two Republicans to lead the investigation. The panel has a month to conduct a preliminary investigation, after which Hanna could request a hearing.
