Dems tout success

George Sherman, chair, Summit County Democrats

In your quotes reciting the quite real failings of the Democrats nationally in the last election (Summit Daily, Nov. 8), I found no mention of the equally real electoral successes of the Democrats in Summit County.

I hope I am not being myopic, missing the proverbial forest for the trees, when I point out to your readers that we Democrats won a major victory in Summit County Nov. 5.

With the regrettable exception of Rollie Heath’s defeat in the gubernatorial race, all of our candidates for state and national office won by substantial margins in our county.

Mark Udall goes to Congress with a 60 percent majority from Summit; Tom Strickland received 54.4 per cent of our county ballots in his failed bid for the U.S. Senate.

Equally important, in the cases of Joan Fitz-Gerald in the Colorado State Senate and Carl Miller in the State House, Summit County majorities supplied the margin of victory needed to help compensate for narrow losses elsewhere in their districts.

Naturally, we Democrats are disappointed the rest of the nation did not go along with Summit County at the polls.

Yet, those results should not obscure the magnitude of our success here at home. My thanks go to the many volunteers of the Summit County Democratic Party who brought us that hard-won victory – and, of course, to the voters at large who responded in majority strength to our message.
