Denverite supports good neighbor water policy

Debra BarringerDenver

I wanted to let the citizens in your area know that I urged my state representative to support House Bill 1296, which gives local (usually Western Slope) communities more influence in what happens to water from their area before it is moved elsewhere. This bill is not only a “good neighbor” policy by allowing citizens to bargain more effectively to keep water in the streams, but asks water districts and water courts to minimize impacts to local communities and the environment in a basin of origin. This is important to me because it benefits the vegetation and wildlife that depend upon natural water sources. And the natural landscapes and species, as well as the historic towns, are why many of us appreciate the Western Slope region as a place to visit.
