Deputy not fooled by fake insurance

SUMMIT COUNTY – A piece of cardboard with a number and “Gieco” handwritten on it didn’t pass for valid insurance when a man tried to use it during a traffic stop.

Asked where to find the motorcycle’s vehicle identification number, the man replied, “It doesn’t have one because I built it, and I haven’t put it on yet,” according to a report from Summit County Sheriff’s Office.

A deputy pulled the man over for driving 16 mph over the speed limit. The man didn’t provide proof of registration on the bike, but said the information was available at his home.

At the residence, the man handed the deputy a title for a 1980 Honda motorcycle, explaining that it was the bike he was riding. The deputy found a VIN the man provided to belong to a 2008 Honda motorcycle.

“(The) motorcycle did not have a functioning tail-light, there was no horn or audible signals and there was no speedometer attached to it…” according to the report.

The bike had an invalid Illinois license plate. The deputy asked the man for his Illinois registration and insurance cards and the man replied that those were both in Illinois, according to the report.

The deputy had the motorcycle towed for fictitious plates and no proof of insurance.

The man was issued a summons on charges of speeding, fictitious plates, drove unsafe or defective vehicle and no proof of insurance, according to the report.
