Dick McAllaster: Let’s pay Westcott’s fines

Dick McAllaster

I read with interest your article on Jeff Westcott and the US Forest Service’s decision to fine him for using mechanized equipment to remove snow prior to the race this summer. While I understand the Forest Service’s decision to fine Jeff, I also feel that Jeff has performed a great service to Summit County youth through the Mountain Bike Little League and to all bike riders through the Firecracker 50, and he certainly should have built up some good will with the Forest Service over many years.

Jeff introduced my son Ricky to mountain biking 10 years ago, and he has been instrumental to the incredible growth in biking in Summit County over the past 10+ years. We all owe a debt of gratitude to Jeff, and I personally would like to participate in the payment of the Forest Service fine. Call me at (912) 658-7901 or email me at rem232@yahoo.com if you would also like to participate and I will gather the funds and get them to Jeff.
