Dillon cancels Saturday fireworks display due to dry conditions

Daily News staff reports

The town of Dillon announced that the fireworks display scheduled to follow the United States Air Force Academy Band performance on Saturday at the Dillon Amphitheatre has been canceled due to extremely dry conditions.

“The town cannot take any risks that could potentially result in devastation to our community. The extremely dry conditions make the fireworks display just too risky at this time,” said town manager Joe Wray.

Police chief Steve Neumeyer echoed Wray’s sentiments.

“We are monitoring the long-range forecast, but we do not see enough potential precipitation in the immediate future to make the event safe for our community,” he said. “High winds are compounding the risk at hand.”

Mayor Ron Holland said that while the fireworks display are always a perfect ending to the Never Forget Our Soldiers Evening of Tribute event, the evening will still be fabulous.

“The U.S. Air Force Academy Band is one of the best in the world,” Holland said. “We are lucky to have them returning again for this concert.”
