Dillon has received five proposals from law firms seeking to become the town’s next town attorney.
Town Manager Nathan Johnson said that the Dillon Town Council will review the five responses to the town’s request for proposals seeking a new attorney at its next meeting on Tuesday, July 23.
The resignation of the town’s previous attorney, Kelly P.C., took effect July 12. Kathleen Kelly, of Kelly P.C., had announced her resignation a month earlier, after a meeting where Dillon Town Council went against her advice.
Johnson has said that the town’s lack of a town attorney could stymie the Town Council’s ability to get business done, since documents that goes before the Town Council has to first be reviewed by the town attorney’s office.
Under an ideal timeline, the Town Council will review the potential candidates at its next meeting and then schedule interviews with candidates for the following meeting on Tuesday, Aug. 13, Johnson said. Then, a new town attorney could be approved at the Town Council meeting, Tuesday, Aug. 27, he said.
Kelly submitted her firm’s 30-day notice of resignation last month after a June 13 Town Council meeting where council members went against her legal advice. She had advised of potential constitutional issues with allowing certain religious groups, but not other groups, to use the town-owned amphitheater. But, the Town Council voted to allow the Dillon Community Church to hold Sunday services at the amphitheater before ultimately deciding to reverse course.
