The Dillon Town Council held a first reading Tuesday on an amendment to the town code that would allow sales by vendors in public parks. It was unanimously approved, which means the amendment will be brought up at the next meeting Feb. 5 for a public hearing.

The amendment was previously discussed in a planning and zoning commission meeting Jan. 8. The commission agreed to recommend the amendment change to the council at the Tuesday meeting.

Under the parks and open space zone section in the zoning chapter of the Dillon municipal code, the “permitted uses” section has been re-written to allow “town permitted markets, festivals and events that allow for the sale to the general public of food, beverages, farm products, and arts and crafts products on a temporary basis by a variety of vendors.”

“This allows more community-based vendor events to be held on town parks property,” said Joe Wray, Dillon town manager, adding that this would help in “moving forward to utilization of town parks to a greater degree.”

Earlier in the year, the town council suggested rezoning part of Dillon Town Park, specifically the ballfield, to hold events like the Dillon Farmers Market. Community members attended several council meetings to voice their disapproval of that move. In face of the community’s opposition, the council withdrew its rezoning application and now is proposing the amendment to the municipal code.

“It’s simply adding in language to allow for vendors, instead of rezone,” Wray said.
