Dillon eyes seniors as key population

DILLON ” Seniors of Summit County hope to pinpoint needs of a growing elderly group in Summit County with a survey sent out in January.

“We don’t really have anything that’s specifically available for senior citizens in the county,” said Linda Venturoni of Venturoni Surveys and Research.

The survey was created when the Seniors of Summit County partnered with Venturoni Surveys and Research to survey the community about senior demographics. Its purpose is to look at the possibilities of senior housing in the county ” anything from independent housing to short-term care and assisted living, Venturoni said.

“They’re trying to get information on feasibility of services for Summit County,” said Devin Granbery, Dillon’s town manager.

The Town of Dillon gave them $500 for this study last fall, Granbery added.

Dillon officials are contemplating turning “old” Dillon into an active-senior community as a way to breathe new life into its struggling town center.

The move could attract more full-time residents to Summit County’s sleepy burg after the town itself killed off retail business in the core with creation of the Dillon Ridge shopping center.

“We’re looking at all sorts of strategies,” said Devin Granbery, Dillon town manager. “One recommendation was to bring more warm bodies, residents that are there 24 hours a day, seven days a week, to the town center. … Active senior facilities or continued-care facilities would be considered. The town is actively looking at different strategies that we could pursue.”

Dillon doesn’t have any specific proposals at this point, but town officials say they are open to all possibilities.

The survey was mailed to the community in the first week of January, and results are currently being processed. They’ll likely be studied by the Seniors of Summit County in March.
