Dillon Valley hosts annual El Grito del Valle event

DILLON – The community is invited to join Dillon Valley Elementary School staff, students and parents for the 5th annual running of the El Grito del Valle race Sunday. This walk/run celebrates Mexican Independence Day and benefits the dual-language program at Dillon Valley.This fun family event is designed for runners and walkers of all ages and abilities. The course encompasses the Dillon Valley neighborhood and begins and ends at the elementary school. Registration forms can be picked up at the school or found at http://www.elgritodelvalle.com. Participants are encouraged to register early.Cost for entrants is $10 for kids (15 & under), $20 for adults. Race day registration costs an additional $5. Race day registration and packet pick-up runs from 9:30-10:45 a.m. and the 1.5K and 5K walk/run begins at 11 a.m. Entertainment and the Mercado run is set from noon to 2 p.m.”El Grito” means “the shout for independence.” Father Miguel Hidalgo rang the church bell in the village of Dolores at midnight on September 15, 1810. This was the signal; the call to begin the struggle for Mexican Independence to end 300 years of Spanish rule.
