Dog owner responsible for keeping animal safe

I would like to comment on your Summit Up column on April 3.

I strongly disagree with the mislabeling of an unknown person in your column. How do you call the person a “scum” for unfortunately and accidentally running over the poor dog, Brandon? The real scum is the owner, for letting his or her dog run loose in close proximity of Highway 9 south of Breckenridge.

It is the responsibility of the owner to make sure his pet is always safe and out of harm’s way! It is not my responsibility to try and avoid moving objects when I’m driving the speed limit (50 mph) to and from town.

To my knowledge, there is a leash law in effect in Blue River. If anything, the owners of the deceased dog should be fined and forced to pay for any damage to the vehicle.

It’s unfortunate the driver did not stop – another example of not taking responsibility for one’s actions (which happens too often in Summit County). If people would take better care of their pets, there would be a lot fewer pet fatalities on our county roads. I just ask that you take a look at the issues and the whole picture before pointing fingers and calling names.
