Don Severe: Political correctness=censorship

Political correctness is one of the most disingenuous, divisive and destructive aberrations foisted on us in the last half century. In fact, political correctness is anything but correct behavior. It is used to disparage ones neighbors and fellow citizens who do not act in the manner where correctness has somehow been established by the P.C. crowd. People who practice political correctness stifle free thought and diversity of opinion. In essence, it is censorship.

It is within human nature to be opinionated, to view and judge things by subjective filters and be individualistic in ones thinking. And, this is a first amendment right under the Constitution!

In reality, political correctness is one of the greatest single causes of disunity in the United States. It is not covered under laws nor has it been approved by the majority of American citizens. It is an anomaly.

Under the political correctness doctrine, one cannot identify people’s actions for what they really are. It has created a new wave dictionary of words. For example, the word “terrorism” has been changed to “man-caused disasters.” It is no longer P.C. to call a spade a spade. However, to postulate, a rose by any other name is still a rose.

Political correctness was recently demonstrated in the case of Major Nidal Hasan, the Ft. Hood terrorist. Yes, I said terrorist because that is exactly what he is. He caused a manmade disaster as a cowardly terrorist.

Fortunately, the founding fathers of this great nation were not P.C. They clearly and frankly expressed their feelings. Because they were forthright, we now have a Constitution that affords us freedoms never experienced in the world before or since. But, if the radical PCers get their way, those freedoms could diminish to our detriment.

There are some well-meaning citizens who have been drawn in to the “web” of political correctness. Peer pressure from the left may prevent them from being free and clear thinking people. They, apparently, do not realize the damage that this harmful practice is causing our society and future generations.
