Donald Chisholm MD: Keep gov’t out of health care

Donald Chisholm MD

American health care is the best health care the world has ever known. Most Americans and the rest of the world know it. Medical care is what Americans do best – but as free individuals. Why is it that some in Washington want to call it broken and want to change it? Could there be a political motive for those in power to fix something most of us know is not perfect but also know it is not broken like the “free” health care is in the rest of the world?

The first and most important step is to understand what we really have in American medical care. And to understand it without the propaganda of those with a political agenda. “A modern day wonder and miracle and the last great hope” is the way it is described by those coming for care to America from socialized medical systems and from the under-served world. Perhaps it is because our health care is not a system at all. Perhaps it is because our medical care is just that – true care – individual humans highly motivated and trained in the true science of the human condition caring for individual humans in need. The vast majority of the professional doctors and nurses and para-professionals and technicians, and the volunteers have a common bond and a common goal that is basically to serve and protect the lives of fellow humans of all ages and in all conditions. The great secret of American medical caregivers from professionals to volunteers is that care is for the most part given not extracted by a controlling all-powerful bureaucracy.

The role of Government in America should be limited to what they can do best – protect us from those who would destroy us from within and without our borders. Health care in America should be left to the patients and our doctors and our health care givers. Our last best hope is that America will be allowed to continue in its greatness. It is what we do the best and it is the best the world has ever known.
