Donald Van Dyne: Vote ‘no’ on Keystone PID

Donald Van Dyne

Mark Meyer’s letter about Keystone highway beautification is right on target. Keystone would jump to improve the medians and the Keystone-owned property that the proponents want to spend money on, if they thought it was important to guests. Mark wrote that Vail has $1.9 billion in assets and sales of $869 million last year. The Wall Street owners of Keystone have multi-millions, but we are being asked to pay for the beautification.

We don’t need all those water-hungry flowers shown on the PID website. Sure, it would be pretty for a short time in the summer. We moved to Keystone because it is a great place to ski and have fun with family. The medians and the Keystone property on the Highway 6 corners look fine to us. We could have used $3 million to build a permanent Warren Station instead of another tent.

$3 million is wasted on the medians that Keystone decided wasn’t worth their money. Like Mark wrote, Keystone would have spent the money (probably nowhere near $3+ million) if their marketing research showed flowers would help sell the resort. These improvements won’t be seen by skiers. They want to get to the slopes and then back to Denver. They couldn’t care less about dirty snowplow-covered medians. They won’t know we wasted over $3 million for plowed road dirt on pennants and empty flower boxes. Someone said recently that skiers care about fresh powder, free parking and cheap food. We agree.

Summit County Government just laid off 10 people. There’s a financial crisis looming in the county and the school system. Spend $3 million on flowers? Not a good decision.

Vote “no” on the Keystone $3 million Flower PID – 1A, 1B and 1C.
