Don’t cut into Breck’s undeveloped terrain with a new lift to the top of Peak 8

It was intriguing to read Steve Hunter’s letter Sept. 3 concerning the Summit Lift on Peak 8 at Breckenridge. What Mr. Hunter called a “dangerously exhausting hike” is, in fact, a form of natural selection that keeps the summit of Peak 8 accessible only to the fit, healthy athletes who should be using that terrain. The Breckenridge Ski Resort has averaged three to four fatalities a year for the last five years. The majority of these fatalities occur when a skier or rider with minimal experience puts themselves on terrain too advanced for their ability level resulting in their inability to maintain control.I guarantee you that hordes of inexperienced skiers will be drawn to the summit of Peak 8 only to find themselves in a horribly unsafe situation, endangering both themselves and others. Breckenridge is marketed as a family ski area and college party town, and the Summit Lift wouldn’t even change the vertical drop that Breckenridge already claims. Let Jackson Hole and Alta remain the havens for the extreme enthusiast. Perhaps we could keep what little undeveloped terrain we have as an escape from the weekend crowds. In fact, maybe you could take the astronomical cost that Vail Resorts would incur to build a new lift and redirect it to the ski patrol budget so that we might actually make our mountain safer, rather than more dangerous for our winter visitors.
