Don’t turn A-Basin into Disneyland

Frank and Julie Taft Wildernest

As Summit County residents and Rocky Mountain Masters racers, we are saddened to hear of the possible plan for the future of Arapahoe Basin ski area.A-Basin is one of the last “true” ski areas – no condos, no dining, no shopping, no nightlife – just pure skiing. And with the new snowmaking, skiing from October until May or June makes it one of the only areas for the true skier – the one who would ski all year if they could. It also makes the area attractive to international racing teams who have been using the hill for early-season training, distinguishing A-Basin as a serious ski area and not just another Disneyland at the base of a ski hill. How can any “private” club possibly co-exist with the “beach?” Music playing, dogs everywhere, barbecues and beer – all that we love about A-Basin.Privatizing will demand improvements – like paved pay parking, expensive lifts, new lodges, retail – everything that drives the price of skiing up. Please, we don’t need any more trinket shops or condos built in the pursuit of “extreme capitalism.”
