Don’t vote for 3A and 3B

TERRY BLEDSOE

I am replying to the Sept. 28 and the Sept. 29 editorials and articles by the new school superintendent, all recommending that we vote to tax ourselves more.I hate to not only not jump on the bandwagon, but maybe also to point out a few cracked wheels. First, let’s put this up front: no one “saves” anything with referendums 3A and 3B. As much as I like the word disingenuous, let me state outright that a reduction rather than elimination of a special tax, and a bond issue, will cost you money. On 3A, we’re voting for building maintenance and more techology? Why not janitorial services and bigger portions at lunch?Having been in every single school in Summit County the technology is more than adequate in each classroom, with a school media room that would be the envy of many high tech companies. That leaves a stated need in 3A of an extra 2.6 million for maintenance. On 3B, $32.6 million to renovate three schools? Granted these three schools are not showcases, but they are functioning well. How’s your house? Would you like a few million to make the floorplan better and add a few upgrades? Me too, but I can’t afford it. Can you?So that leaves $2.6 million if we want our schools maintained to a higher standard than state law provides. Let’s see: $2.6 million is less than the $36.6 million requested by 3A and 3B. I think we should vote no on 3A and 3B and send the Summit School District back to the financial drawing board.
