DUI checkpoints assume guilty until proven innocent

Alex Johnson

This is in regard to the letter I wrote July 13. I made a mistake in assuming that Sheriff John Minor was solely responsible for the DUI checkpoint that occurred July 9. I was out of town all week until that Friday and had not seen the article that had been in the paper earlier in the week. I was just shocked to see all the people getting pulled over for something they may or may not have been guilty of. So I apologize for assuming it was all John Minor’s doing. For all I know and have heard John Minor is doing a fine job as sheriff. And while I agree with just about everyone that the roads are much better without drunken drivers, I still feel that the premise of “guilty until proven innocent” is wrong. And that is what checkpoints are. You are guilty until you prove your innocence. How effective was the one the other night? Only one person was found to be driving drunk. Not very many guilty people at all.Using the same logic, police could keep the county safer by going door to door and searching everybody’s homes for drugs or weapons or any sort of wrong doing. But that is unconstitutional.I understand that the checkpoints are required to get state funding and because of that I understand the need to have them. I just wonder if saturation patrols are the better way of seeking out the guilty without involving the innocent.Alex JohnsonBreckenridge
