Re: “Understanding her party’s platform, by Ted Thomas, letters, Sept. 22

Why do liberals insist on inventing lies and making obvious misstatements when tying to make a case against Republican Party values and positions? This seems to be a tactic in play from the highest national levels down to local politics.

In his critique of Ms. Wickert’s letter, Mr. Thomas claims that the GOP Party “is determined to criminalize abortion and birth control.” Not true! He also states this policy is a plank in the Party platform. Not true! The 2012 RNC Platform actually states: “Through Obamacare, the current Administration has promoted the notion of abortion as healthcare. We, however, affirm the dignity of women by protecting the sanctity of human life. Numerous studies have shown that abortion endangers the health and well-being of women, and we stand firmly against it….We call on the government to permanently ban all federal funding and subsidies for abortion and healthcare plans that include abortion coverage…. We support the ability of all organizations to provide, purchase, or enroll in healthcare coverage consistent with their religious, moral or ethical convictions without discrimination or penalty.

Mr. Thomas also uses the frequently stated national Democratic claim that Republicans are waging a war on women and wish to deny women the right to make personal medical decisions. Wrong again; perhaps he has fallen for his Party’s lies.

Come on, folks, let’s try to stick to facts, do our research, and avoid mean-spirited, dishonest accusations. Political discussions are helpful to voters when truthfully presented, but let’s not try to deliberately mislead one another with inaccurate portrayals of polices and beliefs. Certainly, many of the issues are complicated and emotion-packed, and we should not confuse voters with erroneous information.
