Eagle County to use new voting machines

SCOTT N. MILLEReagle county correspondent

EAGLE – It looks kind of like an iPod, but bigger. This, though, is the future of voting in Eagle County.Eagle County Clerk and Recorder Teak Simonton’s office has 56 new voting machines and is trying to get out the word about how they work. The short answer to the “how it works” question is “pretty simply.”A handful of buttons on the machine allows voters to scroll through a ballot and pick candidates or answer ballot questions. When voters are done, it’s time to punch the big, red “cast ballot” button. To help voters learn about the machines, Simonton and office employees will hold 10 information sessions between now and the end of July at local grocery stores from Vail to El Jebel. The sessions will run between 5 and 7 p.m.”I hope a lot of people take the time to come out and get a sense of how they work,” Simonton said.People will need to get used to the new machines. Except for absentee ballots sent through the mail, the electronic machines will be the only way to vote in Eagle County this year. Every polling place will have an election judge available to help those who may be confused by the new machines. Those polling places will have paper ballots on hand in case a machine breaks, or if the number of voters overwhelms the machines available.
