"Eddie’ was a special person

Barbara Davis - Mayor, town of Dillon

His real name was Mike Duarte, but since there were too many Mikes working at UPS, the company gave him the nickname “Eddie.”

At least that’s what he told me shortly after I moved to Dillon. I used to just call him “Eddie-Mike.” That way my bases were covered.

Eddie-Mike was a very, very special person. I realized that the first time I met him. I will never forget the first UPS delivery he made to my home five and a half years ago.

He patiently waited for me to answer the door and personally handed me my package. He wanted to “get to know” me since I was a newcomer.

Even though his job was very demanding, with numerous stops to make and deadlines to meet, he took the time to answer all of my silly questions about the community and truly made me feel welcome.

He knew my car and made a point to honk and wave every time we passed each other. If he had a delivery at Dillon Town Hall he would stop by my office just to say hello.

I didn’t know him that well, but he was one of those rare individuals you meet once in a while who you would consider a friend not just an acquaintance.

His smile was engaging, his laughter was infectious and his compassion for work was enviable. What a great ambassador and role model he was. UPS should be proud of him.

Today, on my way to the grocery store, I passed a UPS truck. My face lit up hoping it was Eddie-Mike and this was all a bad dream.

Unfortunately, the realization hit me, and I know he is gone forever. Maybe someday our paths will cross again.
