Edward Abbey’s book focuses not just on Glen Canyon Dam but on destruction of the West

Letter writer Gray Pearson’s grudge against Edward Abbey sounds like a personal vendetta.

Abbey’s fictional book, “The Monkey Wrench Gang,” focused on much more than restoring Glen Canyon. In many of his books, Abbey focused on the destruction of the West through development, oil exploration, water diversion, and other human-

hungry flaws.

The Summit Daily’s decision to include Abbey’s thoughts on the Glen Canyon Dam was not “lacking in social conscience.” In fact, this is a very important debate for all Colorado River water users.

Abbey was one of many activists to set the stage for people to rethink conservation and diversification procedures to such a vulnerable diversion system as the Glen Canyon Dam.
