86, of Leadville dies

Edward James O’Leary, 86 of Leadville, passed away Sept. 6 at Collier Hospice Center in Wheat Ridge of renal failure. He was born Aug. 5, 1926, in Butte, Mont., to John T. and Emma (Schlaepfer) O’Leary. He married Dorothy Mae (Amrine) O’Leary on July 14, 1950, in Buena Vista. They were married 62 years.

Edward served in the Army with the 77th Combat Division and the 6th Aircraft Repair Unit from April 18, 1945, to Dec. 9, 1946, when he was honorably discharged. He received the Asiatic Pacific Campaign Medal, World War II Victory Medal and the Army of Occupation Medal.

He owned and operated Valley Home Dairy from 1946-1990 and served as a Lake County commissioner for eight years. He was a member of the Leadville Elks Lodge #236, Lake County Democratic Party, American Legion and a member and past commander of Leadville VFW Post #859. Edward was also a former Elder at First Presbyterian Church of Leadville, a former member of the Community Corrections Board and a member of the AARP, where he received the Prestigious Chapter Award. He enjoyed old cars, bowling and travel and loved family activities.

Edward is survived by his wife, Dorothy; daughters, Charlene and husband, Jim Luke, and Colleen LeClaire; son, James and wife, Patti O’Leary; grandchildren, Michael Luke, Jennifer Gonzales, Candace LeClaire and Jamie Roberts, step-grandchildren, Francine Bush and Jessica Phelps; great grandchildren, Scarlett Folz-LeClaire, Celeste Gonzales and Xander Roberts; step-great grandchildren, Chastine Wrye, Ashley Nye, Hannah Bush and Micah Bush; sisters, Adeline Hallock, Mary DalPiaz and Doris Grassick; brothers, Don O’Leary, John O’Leary, Emmett O’Leary, Alfred O’Leary, Albert O’Leary, Rick O’Leary and Charlie O’Leary; numerous nieces, nephews, grand nieces and grand nephews. He is preceded in death by his parents; daughter, Christine O’Leary; and brothers, Mark and Kenneth O’Leary.

A visitation will be from 6-8 p.m. on Monday, Sept. 10 at Bailey-Kent Funeral Home in Leadville. Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 11 at First Presbyterian Church of Leadville with Reverend Peggy Marshall officiating. Burial will be at Elk’s Rest Cemetery in Leadville with a reception to follow at Leadville Elks Lodge #236.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Collier Hospice Center, 3210 Lutheran Parkway, Wheat Ridge, CO. 80033. Bailey-Kent Funeral Home is assisting the family with arrangements.
