Emily Tracy: More on gun violence
Two weeks ago my Guest Commentary, “Gun violence – had enough yet?” was published in the Summit Daily News. Some of the online comments and subsequent letters in response to the column were, sadly, not constructive and often off the mark.
The point of the column was to raise the issue of the frequency of gun violence in our state, nothing more. It was not about increasing or decreasing gun control or gun regulations. It was simply a request to begin a reasonable dialogue about the amount of gun violence on our streets and in our homes, and to ask that everyone participate in a dialogue about the excessive injuries and deaths we see in Colorado.
We need all viewpoints in the dialogue – gun owners, gun collectors, those who don’t have and don’t want guns in their homes, law enforcement, child protection advocates, school administrators, and many others. Most elected officials in Colorado do not want to touch this issue – they may have opinions about the excessive gun violence, but they usually won’t express those opinions in public.
Can a constructive dialogue begin? I hope so.
