Energy bill must never become law

Nancy Hassinger, Breckenridge

Sen. Ben Nighthorse Campbell is one of a handful of handpicked members of the House and Senate who secretly drafted the 1,700-page energy bill sponsored by Republicans.

This must never become law. Here are just three simple reasons why:

Money: Oil and gas firms have given $160 million to Republicans since 1990. “W” is paying them back in the energy bill with subsidies to the tune of more than $18 billion. The bill also effectively reduces royalties that oil and gas companies pay Colorado for sacrificing our public lands.

Special Interests: Republican Bill Tauzin of Louisiana gets $180 million to build a Hooters in Shreveport. Republican Bob Beauprez of Aurora attached tax-free financing to refurbish a Lakewood mall for one of his biggest campaign contributors.

Environment: The bill continues this administration’s assault on the environment by including exceptions and exemptions to the Safe Drinking Water Act and the Clean Water Act.

For example, the permitted “hydraulic fracturing” can include pouring diesel into our groundwater. The bill exempts oil and gas companies from the stormwater requirements of the Clean Water Act.

The cost of environmental cleanup from the makers of MTBE fuel additives is shifted from the makers to the taxpayers.

Instead of providing a practical vision for the future, this bill funnels billions to the biggest polluters, wastes tax dollars, and puts our environment at risk.
