Engine No. 9 to rolls into Breckenridge today

Daily News staff report

The Breckenridge Heritage Alliance is excited to announce Engine No. 9’s homecoming today. Pending weather conditions and travel to Breckenridge, the locomotive will be delivered via truck from Palisade, where it underwent a cosmetic restoration. No. 9 will be unloaded at the Rotary Snowplow Park, next to the ice rink on Boreas Pass Road.

For the past three months, the BHA has been busy preparing for Engine No. 9’s arrival. The alliance recently completed work on an open-air shelter that will house No. 9 and protect the locomotive from harsh weather elements. The shelter was completed with more than $40,000 in in-kind donations of materials and labor.

Engine No. 9, built by Cooke Locomotive Works, was one of a pioneering set of locomotives that used narrow-gauge rail to navigate the high, dangerous mountain terrain of Colorado. It operated on the Denver to Leadville “High Line” from 1884-1937, pulling freight and passenger cars for 53 years. No. 9 was the last passenger train over Boreas Pass – the highest rail pass in the United States at the time – when the line was discontinued. During No. 9’s tenure, Baby Doe Tabor, the Unsinkable Molly Brown and Tom’s Baby were all passengers. Following its service, the locomotive went on display at the New York World Fair from 1939-1940.
