A fire about 2 miles west of Lake George that grew to about 40 acres Thursday was 40 percent contained later in the day, and a voluntary evacuation order was lifted, the U.S. Forest Service said.

Crews, including 10 smokejumpers from Grand Junction who joined the battle Thursday afternoon, will remain on the scene all night and efforts to expand containment continue Friday morning, said Dawn Sanchez, forest service spokeswoman.

The voluntary evacuations were recommended earlier Thursday for people living in eight homes within a mile of the Arkansas Fire in Park County. Sanchez fire engines are stationed near the homes closest to the fire for structure protection.

The fire is about 1 mile south of Highway 24 and was sparked sometime Wednesday night by lightning, Sanchez said. It was discovered about 4 a.m. Thursday.
