Evacuations ordered as New Mexico fire grows to 3,000 acres

EL RITO, N.M. ” About 100 residents were evacuated from their homes as a fire charred as much as 3,000 acres in forest near El Rito in north-central New Mexico.

The fire was burning in pine, pinon and juniper in the Carson National Forest. The possibility of gusty winds later today worried firefighters.

“We may get a lot of fire activity this afternoon,” said Dorotea Martinez of the U.S. Forest Service, who estimated the fire’s size at between 2,000 to 3,000 acres.

Fire crews were still going door to door this morning in the area north of El Rito to make sure people were complying with a mandatory evacuation order, she said. Campgrounds north of town also were evacuated, and at least three forest roads in the area were closed.

The blaze started Saturday about 3 p.m. The cause was unknown.
