‘Extreme cold’ to come to Summit County starting Monday, National Weather Service warns

The National Weather Service is placing areas in Colorado including all of Summit County under an extreme cold watch starting Monday, Jan. 20. The advisory is set to last from Monday at 6 p.m. through Tuesday at 9 a.m.

Dangerously cold wind chills in the minus 35-50 range are possible in Summit County during the advisory period, according to the National Weather Service. The advisory goes on to warn that “hypothermia will occur with prolonged exposure to the wind and very cold temperatures (and) frostbite is likely after several minutes of exposed skin.” Those who must go outdoors should dress in several layers of warm clothing including a hat, face mask and gloves, the advisory states, and avoid prolonged exposure.

Monday is expected to see an 80% chance of snow and a high near 6 with wind chill values as low as minus 19, according to a National Weather Service forecast. Monday night temperatures could drop as low as minus 17 with wind chill values as low as minus 28.
