Fairplay teen struck and killed by truck

FAIRPLAY ” A 15-year-old Fairplay girl was killed Monday evening after a truck struck her on northbound U.S. Highway 285, according to a press release from the Fairplay Police Department.

Carlee Cardova died of massive head injuries after a truck driven by Robert J. Lee, of Ft. Collins, hit her just before 7 p.m. near the Western Inn.

Fairplay Police Chief David Gottschalk said charges will not be filed against Lee at this time based on the initial investigation into the accident, but the final determination on charges will be made after the investigation is complete and police have conferred with the district attorney.

Gottschalk said he couldn’t release details of how the accident because the investigation is ongoing, however the investigation should be finished within the next few days. There are no pedestrian crosswalks on the unlit section of highway where the accident occurred and the speed limit is 45 miles per hour, Gottschalk said.

The highway was closed for about four hours on Monday night while the initial investigation was completed.

“On behalf of the Town of Fairplay our deepest and most heartfelt sympathy go out to the family and friends who suffered such a terrible loss,” Gottschalk said in the press release.

Cardova attended South Park High School in Park County.
