GRAND JUNCTION ” A relative of the family of slain teenager Jacob Grabe described his family as devout Christians who regularly attended a small church in Whitewater.

Jacob Grabe, 13, was shot in the head and killed Thursday night at his family’s Pear Park home, allegedly at the hand of his father, Allen Grabe, 51.

“Allen was a very quiet individual, but we never saw any signs suggesting this could happen,” said Heather Hoey, a cousin of Jacob Grabe’s mother, Jaquette.

According to dispatch radio traffic, the boy’s mother called 911 and reported her husband had shot her son in the head.

A 911 dispatcher described hearing “several gunshots” while taking the call and the husband yelling at his wife.

Jacob Grabe lived with a mild case of autism, Asperger’s Syndrome ” “very quiet, very smart,” Hoey said. He started writing lessons offered through his church, Whitewater’s nondenominational A House for His Name.

“It opened him up,” Hoey said of the lessons. “He and his mom did everything together.”

The pair took nature walks together, and he traveled with his mother to deliver her Avon orders, according to an obituary released by the family

“He also enjoyed going and helping his dad with his window-washing business,” according to the obituary.

Services are scheduled for Saturday.
