Farewell to the Independent Daily; long live Devon O’Neil

Anne Chapman

Despite the fact that I avidly read the Summit Daily News, I have appreciated having a second daily newspaper in Summit County, and I am sad not to see the Independent Daily in the newspaper stand next to yours.

I would particularly like to pay a tribute to sports editor Devon O’Neil.

Devon has been much more than a reporter of sports. He has been at many local events, encouraging athletes and has even participated in some, involving himself in the spirit.

His patience with all of the high school events was incredible. Devon did more than he realizes to promote Summit High sports and the individual athletes, not to mention coaches, administration and supporters.

He has been a great inspiration to my daughter, Kate, as a budding recreation journalist.

Many of us as parents and recreationalists would like to wish Devon well with whatever he pursues, but hope it is somehow associated with journalism and Summit County.

EDITOR’S NOTE: Devon O’Neil takes over as sports editor at the Summit Daily News today.
