Fateful decision requires a no vote

Jerry Lefevre, Silverthorne

Silverthorne citizens have an important decision to make, a decision that will change the face of our town for eternity.

When we vote, we are not voting whether or not to build a Safeway. There is no guarantee that a Safeway will be built.

We are voting whether to change the zoning for the land in question from A-1, agricultural.

Yes, the property is privately owned, but because of the zoning the current owner is restricted in what he can build. With current zoning, the land will more than likely remain virtually untouched.

By mistakenly voting yes and giving the property planned unit development designation, we will change the way the property can be used.

A no vote will ensure that no commercial development will take place. It is essential for all concerned to get out and voice their opinion. The town of Silverthorne insists that we need this commercial development to be financially secure

I say that the town needs to look at itself and develop a better business plan. Large amounts of commercial square footage in town are unoccupied.

Parcels of undeveloped land, many along Blue River Parkway, are much closer to Interstate 70 and have a much better chance for economic viability.

It is not in our best interest to continue commercial sprawl when the results will just be more unoccupied storefronts. Even if the Safeway is built, it will take decades before its economic benefits will be felt.

Neither Dillon’s City Market nor Frisco’s Safeway operates anywhere near capacity. If you feel that for convenience sake, you need to have your own grocery store three miles closer than the current one , you need to give up the moniker of mountain man/woman, and move to the city where you belong.
