DENVER ” Colorado will get an extra $141 million in Medicaid money from the federal government starting this week.

President Barack Obama told governors gathered in Washington on Monday that he would begin distributing $15 billion to help them pay for Medicaid beginning Wednesday.

The $141 million for Colorado covers only the period from last October through March. State budget analysts expect to get another $55 million before the end of the state fiscal year in June.

Medicaid provides health care to the poor and is normally funded 50-50 by the states and federal government. The federal stimulus bill increases the share paid by the federal government to prevent cuts to the programs at a time when more people may need help.

Some Colorado lawmakers want to use the money to help restore cuts in payments to doctors and others who look after Medicaid patients. They have to cut about $600 million from this year’s budget because tax collections are expected to drop amid the recession.
