The Summit County Sheriff’s Office last week wrapped up an investigation that resulted in a felony arson charge, assisted an intoxicated man who was throwing chicken wings at homes and received more than one report of people losing money in phone scams.

The following incidents occurred between Monday, Nov. 25, and Sunday, Dec. 1, according to the weekly log of notable calls published by the Summit County Sheriff’s Office.

The Sheriff’s Office wrote that it wrapped up an investigation last week that began Oct. 8, when law enforcement and firefighters were called to a condominium deck that was on fire. After the fire was extinguished, Sheriff’s Office detectives further reviewed the scene with an arson investigator. In coordination with the 5th Judicial District Attorney’s Office, the suspect was issued a felony summons for arson.

On Monday, Nov. 25, a scammer posing as a Summit County Sheriff’s deputy claimed in a phone call that a county resident had a warrant out for his arrest and requested $500 in prepaid gift cards, which the individual paid. An investigation determined the call to be a scam and information was gathered for a report.

On Tuesday, Nov. 26, a man drove his vehicle up a county road in the North Fork area prior to the roads being closed to winter. The next day when he tried to leave, he found a large berm had been plowed in front of the entrance, and he was unable to get out. Deputies assisted in shoveling the berm down enough for him to get out.

On Wednesday, Nov. 27, a man told deputies that he purchased $800 worth of prepaid gift cards, which he sent to a caller who claimed to be a detective with the Sheriff’s Office. It was determined that the man claiming to be a detective was a scammer. The man was directed to file a report with a local police department on the Front Range since he doesn’t live in Summit County.

Also Wednesday, two deputies observed a man throwing packets of ranch dressing at a school near Breckenridge and later throwing chicken wings at nearby residences. When they attempted to contact the man, he ran, throwing himself into a snowbank and proceeding to make snow angels, losing the rest of his chicken wings in the process. The man, who was intoxicated, was walked to his home nearby and was released to a sober person.

On Friday, Nov. 29, a hotel manager called animal control to report a raccoon that had become stuck in the stairwell. Animal control attempted to catch the raccoon with a pole, but the racoon ran to the second floor and then into the main lobby where he was eventually caught and returned uninjured to the wild.

On Saturday, Nov. 30, deputies received a report of a man running around the pool area in a hotel in Keystone yelling about how someone stole his wallet and phone. He and his partner began searching the pockets of robes in the area and when they found an Apple Watch in one of the robes, they used it to call the owners. The owner of the watch came out of the sauna with his significant other, found the men with his watch and accused them of trying to steal it, causing a verbal argument to begin between the couples. Deputies determined that the fight never became physical and took a report for the missing cell phone.

Also Saturday, deputies received a report from homeowners in unincorporated Summit County that people were cutting Christmas trees down on private property near but not on U.S. Forest Service land. Deputies have been conducting extra watches in the areas where these reports have been received.

In another incident Saturday, deputies responded to a residence in unincorporated Breckenridge due to a father and son who were yelling and throwing things at each other. At the scene, they explained that they were trying to put together a new piece of furniture, which led to an argument and throwing things. While this was going on, a mirror on the wall fell, causing a loud noise. There was no evidence of a struggle between the two and they both agreed to calm down. They were warned for noise.

Deputies were also called for help Saturday when an individual being held in the jail began hitting their cell window and asking for help. When the individual was released from their cell, they jumped into the arms of the deputy and hugged them with their arms and legs. The deputy “calmly” removed the individual from his person, according to the Sheriff’s Office. The individual was determined to be in a state of crisis and procedures were implemented to protect them from harming themself. The System-wide Mental Assessment Response Team, or S.M.A.R.T., provided support and assessed the individual.

On Sunday, Dec. 1, detectives obtained a felony arrest warrant for a man who failed to update his sex offender registration. Having been convicted as a sex offender, the man is required to update his address with the Sheriff’s Office every three months. The Sheriff’s Office maintains a list on its website of all individuals who have been convicted as sex offenders living in unincorporated Summit County.
