Fight for home daycare

Donna Farnum ColeHoughton, Mich.

Good child-care centers are vital and serve a crucial need in our communities. However, they cannot meet the needs of all. For infants and very young children, as well as certain older children who need more of a home atmosphere, a day-care home is best. I had been an elementary teacher for 10 years prior to moving to Breckenridge with two preschoolers in 1979. At that time, there were no teaching positions available and I could not find childcare for my children, so I started a daycare in my home.In the last year before I left Summit County I, too, was threatened with loss of my business because of an ordinance in French Creek against a “commercial” business in the home.I fought it and eventually won permission to continue. It was costly for me, and we soon left the area for the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. I can think of no negatives to allowing day-care homes to exist, but I can think of many positives. For me as a single mother, it gave me a chance to stay home with my children during their formative years and earn enough for us to support ourselves without outside assistance programs. To offer affordable daycare, the community must be very supportive. There is very little profit in running a day-care home. The benefit comes from the intangibles – the quality time spent with children and the satisfaction that comes from offering a service that is valuable. It is inconceivable in my mind that prohibiting childcare in a home should even be considered. I hope the leaders in the town can find a positive solution to this unnecessary dilemma. I have very fond memories of life in Summit County. Please pull together and support each other. Good luck.
