FRISCO What began less than five months ago as an idea to help children learn about peace within themselves has drawn community members together to take action.A group focused on this goal formed, and next weekend a new event, Peace Out!, will be held. The intention is to help kids find skills to calm and center themselves … and learn peace is something they can access within, said Linda Wallace, literacy resource teacher at Dillon Valley Elementary School who started the group. With school shootings and so much conflict being modeled for kids in the media it is a hard world, she continued. So, she called a few friends and at the first meeting 26 women showed up with ideas.Everyone was just so drawn to it, Wallace said.Since that day in February, the group has met every week. It is continually growing and anyone in the community who is interested in being involved is welcome. About 30 businesses are sponsoring Saturdays event and many more individuals dedicated their time and effort.Peace Out! will focus on teaching children ways to experience peace through art, movement, breath, communication, music, relationships and thought. It will include yoga, team building, craft projects, learning how emotions affect heart rhythms and a homemade organic pizza lunch. Each of the activities is broken up in age groups, and while children attend various sessions, adults are welcome to attend a session focused on nurturing compassionate families or to make peace cranes.Following the event, some of the cranes will be sent to the Childrens Monument in Hiroshimas Peace Park. Others will travel to businesses throughout the community. While the energetic, action-oriented Peace Out! group isnt sure of future plans, their goal is to reach as many children as possible to teach them peace skills. They may partner with other organizations throughout the county to do this or continue on as their own organization. The mission is to empower people to find peaceful solutions to lifes challenges, explained group member Pauline Child.Lory Pounder can be reached at (970) 668-4628, or at
